For example, briefly consider the mineral riches of ocean plants that can help to re-mineralize our bodies. The major minerals are found: calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and sulfur. How Many Ways are Food, Diet, Supplements, Health and Disease Connected

What a strange paradox. We all have the inborne ability to be healthy and, yet, we also have manifested choices to be terribly unhealthy.

In the last 100 years our medical time line has moved from using leeches, no sanitation, no microscopes, superstitions and infectious diseases to an antiseptic world of sanitation, miracle drugs, electronic telescopes, molecular genetics where the DNA strands of a genome can be traced and cellular degenerative disease. We can even combine different species such as splicing a fish gene with a wheat gene to grow a plant that is resistant to water damage. We can create life in a test-tube and have cloned animals as well as pondered the human cloning.

Yet after the lights are out, the lab is empty, and the diagnostic tests, drugs and surgery have played their roles, the results are the public has spent 1.6 trillion dollars on health care per year (average) Health care costs are escalating in direct medical and nursing home costs. Younger people are experiencing unheard of health problems as poor diet childhood habits mature into adulthood.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you evaluate the health condition and expectation for yourself as well as the people you know? 1 is poor and 10 is sensational. Five years ago, my evaluation would have been about 5 or 6. Now It's closer to 9.5 with right nutrition and supplements from Mother Nature's whole foods.

Perhaps we live longer, but what is the quality of longevity? Doctors cringe when a person walks in with lupus or arthritis because there is little hope for effective treatment. One out of three people will develop a cellular degenerative disease in their lifetime. This is not an outside invasion of microbes, viruses or flesh-eating bacteria. This means that our own bodies, our own cells, are "warring from within." This means there are more free radicals from various causes attacking our cells than anti-oxidants, obtained from our food, protecting them. Our own cells are not properly ingesting nutrients, eliminating waste, or neutralizing free radical damage . Over the years these multiple stages become manifested as hard-to-cure diseases.

Nutrition related diseases are manifold: heart disease, cancer, diabetes, allergies, GIT disturbances, osteoporosis, kidney problems, and various weight and eating disorders. The US Surgeon General reports that 75% of cardiovascular disease, 60% of women's cancer and 40% of men's cancers are related to diet and nutrition.

A new enemy is emerging in the 21st century---our appetite, fueled by high volume and billion dollar businesses that endorse it. "Modern diets because of food processing, storage, transport and preparation cannot provide the optimal levels of nutrients needed for health and well-being. Supplementation is the only practical answer to this growing problem." Dr. Laz Bannock

Proper nutrition then becomes the basis by which to fortify the body's cells to function properly and heal itself. Unfortunately, proper nutrition even with whole foods is seriously compromised for 3 main reasons.

(1) Degraded soil. It was decided as early as the 1930's with the advent of large farming enterprises that only three nutrients would be used as fertilizers---Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. Soil scientists argued for inclusion of more minerals but were denied by food companies because of expense. Amazingly, it was predicted more than 50 years ago that chronic degenerative disease would result with little hope for treatment

(2) Degraded sick plants. If soils are de-minearlized, then plants are de-minearlized. Plants are our only source of vitamins and minerals and they need the same nutrients in order to transfer them to living cells. Huge factory farms have depleted soil conditions as well as allowable chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides.

(3) Diminished digestive system. Our eating patterns have vastly changed from raw food stuffs to manufactured name brand foods with long shelf lives. Mass production and distribution of industrialized products account for at least 50,000 food stuffs by food engineers.. Contamination in; contamination out.

The soil, the plants, the food are all interconnected. As humans, we are at the top of this vast food chain and whatever benefits or deficiencies that exist are magnified at the top.

Where are the seeds of truth buried? Have we forgotten the laws of nature are based on a balanced reciprocal relationship that applies to all environments as vast as the spaceship Earth and as miniscule as a drop of water, a grain of dirt, or a living cell? The butterfly effect is never more true on a human scale that the smallest change, inclusion or omission, can amplify effects in the body.

The human body is programmed with the inborn potential for abundant survival and regeneration of healthy strong cells, not damage or degeneration. Our biochemistry is complex with 75 trillion individual cells or miniature biochemical factories, intricately linked with every major sysytem. All cells are literally structured from what we eat and all nutrients need to be present in each and every cell. A smart, careful diet should provide all the nutrients in bioavailable form to maintain the cells' metabolic energy, growth, repair and protection against disease.

For example, the bacteria in the digestive tract can affect the cardiovascular health or auto immune defense. Just picture that one half of your nerve cells are located in your digestive system…esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines. Do You Feed Your Cells the Right Food or Junk Food?

The concept of nutrition for the average person is vastly uneducated, underestimated and unappreciated. At one time, I would have fallen into that group. I am not a nutritionist but am a certified nutritional supplement distributor from study courses at The International Institute of Cellular Nutrition. What I learned has transformed my view of nutrition. I no longer take for granted that my choice of food and/or dietary supplements doesn't seriously matter for preventative wellness. For the first time, I did research on the word phytonutrient and its relation to our bodies and the earth.

The understanding is so much clearer that vital health begins with the spoon and fork in the direction of your mouth. The good news is that you control this movement. In my opinion, any discussion about food, diet and supplements needs to include the topic of cellular nutrition.

But how many times have you recently thought that the food I am eating now is to structure and fuel any number of individual cells? We forget about these 'invisible miracles' or masterpieces of design and function.


The cell is the basic unit of the body. It manufactures all the structures and performs all the functions including protection from damaging effects of a toxic environment.

Here is my greatest revelation. The purpose of the food is to feed the biology of the cell.


Food is not just to satisfy our appetites, some mass advertising spiel, store specials or celebrity endorsement.
Each cell needs major macro-nutrients like proteins, fats or lipids and carbohydrates. Each cell requires major micro-nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and essential amino acids . As well, a proper diet includes fibre, probiotics, phytochemicals and anti-oxidants .

We need vitamins because they cannot be manufactured by the body and must be obtained from our foods or diet.

We need at least twenty amino acids for the synthesis of proteins that form living structure, nine of which must be drawn from our diet because our body doesn't produce them.

We need dietary minerals which are chemical elements in inorganic forms which participate in a multitude of biochemical and physiologic processes. Minerals can be divided as three groups with major minerals required in amounts of greater than 100 mg per day. Trace minerals are required less than 100 mg per day but they participate in thousands of biochemical activities and their insufficiencies occur more often than lack of vitamins. There are even micro-trace minerals that comprise the largest group about which we know the least.

Did you know that our mineral intake represents only about 0.3 percent of our total intake of nutrients, yet they are so important that without them, the cells wouldn't be able to utilize the other 99.7% of food stuffs?


In fact, it must be emphasized that all these nutrients are essential substances that interact with each other to maintain optimum health. If even one is missing, or in short supply, then the functions of all the others are impaired. Again the focus is on the healthy activity of each living cell.

Most people who value healthy eating have read copious charts outlining various nutrients, their functions and food sources. Are you surprised to learn how many different elements it takes to make the living body?

The question then becomes a matter of a healthy natural spectrum for a total dietary supplement that can accomplish all these requirements. In my opinion, only the synergy of whole foods and sea vegetables for minerals can begin to address this valuable cellular nutrition.

In conclusion, I hope you do not take the food in your mouth for granted.
